It’s essential to know the amount of money you will need for college overall.  How will you know how much effort you need to put into winning scholarships if you don’t know how much you need?  Not having a goal often keeps students lazy and they often procrastinate because they don’t feel the need to put forth the effort.  If you have that money discussion early, then you will already have an idea of the amount you need.  This knowledge will make your scholarship efforts easier and focused.  It’s good to go for millions of dollars, but knowing WHY you are doing it shows that you have a plan, and can create a strategy to accomplish the goal.
